Unique Problems Require Unique Solutions
When a firearm is used in a crime, everyone up the chain including parents, dealers and manufacturers must be held accountable.
It’s no secret that the US has more mass shootings (defined as 3+ dead not including the shooter) than any other civilized country in the world. Sure, there are some RWNJ (right wing nut job) sites that try to argue otherwise but, bottom line, no other country in the world has the obsession with guns and killing like the US.
Estimates of the number of guns in the US hover around 400 million (400,000,000,) more than 1 firearm for every man, woman and child in the US. If each weapon were worth $50, that’s $2 Trillion dollars tied up in a device that most people have no clue how to use. Of course, most firearms are worth considerably more than $50 so the actual value is probably in the many trillions of dollars. Even if RWNJs, gun nuts and ordinary hunters were willing, they’d be hard pressed to quietly relinquish hundreds of trillions of dollars of private property “for the common good.” This would be akin to mandating all gas guzzling clunkers be forfeit in the name of climate change. I doubt even the most ardent climate change supporters would vote to take it out on those least able to buy a new electric vehicle.
However, it is probable that progressive Democrats and liberals will try to enact legislation that offers incentives in the form of tax rebates or outright cash grants that offset the upfront costs of new electric cars. While this sounds good on the surface, think about a family living paycheck-to-paycheck who already own a working, albeit barely, gas guzzler versus taking on an extra monthly payment even if highly subsidized. Buying a new electric vehicle just doesn’t register on their radar of immediate needs.
Even “feel good” proposals like reducing the rate of fire and magazine capacity are unlikely to go anywhere because the whack jobs who buy dozens of semi-automatic weapons -like- the “awesomeness” of ripping off dozens or hundreds of rounds at a time. Why else would there be a market for bump stocks and automatic fire conversion kits.
Like all American problems, firearms violence requires a financial disincentive to succeed. As a first step, the chain of liability must be extended up the supply chain to the manufacturer. When an automobile defect is uncovered, everyone up the chain from the owner to the dealer to the manufacture are “on the hook” for recalls and repairs. When a firearm is used in a crime, everyone up the chain including parents, dealers and manufacturers must be held accountable.
As I write this post, 14 year old Colt Gray armed with an AR15 platform rifle (an AR15 “chassis”) shot up his high school in Georgia because, well, why not. Daddy, Colin Gray, bought the AR15 as a Christmas gift for Colt because, why not, killing is good, he has a photo of Colt on his phone with blood on his face after killing a deer. And, this was after the FBI had interviewed him and his son for threats posted on social media because, why not, threats is just words. His son ain’t no rag head terrorist. He’s jest a good ol’ white boy. This kid and his brain dead sperm donor are poster children for holding the whole family accountable. Until someone is held financially accountable, nothing with change. The GOP chants of “thoughts and prayers” just isn’t working. God doesn’t give a shit.
