Rednecks, Racists & Religious Zealots

They’re Everywhere!

My wife and I live in a small town of about 7000. We moved here thinking we might enjoy the change after spending our whole adult lives in large cities. Yes, there are fewer cars and the air is cleaner but the trade offs are significant. I never realized rural America has so many Rednecks, Racists and Religious Zealots. I also didn’t realize there are distinct nuances between these varieties.

I’ve come to recognize the difference between Redneck Good Ol’ Boys and Redneck Racists. It basically boils down to conscious versus unconscious behavior. Good Ol’ Boys don’t realize they’re racists but know there are things one doesn’t say aloud in polite society if for no other reason than it’s bad business. Redneck Racists, on the other hand, don’t know, don’t care or are proud of their racist attitudes. They usually project the attitude, “I’ve got my mind made up, don’t confuse me with facts.”

The worst are the Redneck Racist Religious Zealots. They’re sure the Magic Fairy in the Clouds has given them the absolute right to be Redneck Racists. There’s no reasoning with this bunch because, after all, the Magic Fairy is all knowing. These people are what I call the “American Taliban.”
